Today's Quotation:

You have it easily in your power to increase the sum total of this world’s happiness now.  How?  By giving a few words of sincere appreciation to someone who is lonely or discouraged.  Perhaps you will forget tomorrow the kind words you say today, but the recipient may cherish them over a lifetime.

Dale Carnegie

Today's Meditation:

"The sum total of this world's happiness"-- what an amazing concept that is to consider!  And to think that it's possible for each of us to contribute to that amount-- that's even more amazing!

One of the questions that I've used from time to time when considering a certain action or reaction is, "If I do this, am I contributing to the positive in the world, or am I contributing to the anger?"  If someone does something that I don't like and I respond harshly, the resulting emotion on the part of the other person is usually anger or resentment or hurt feelings.  And there it is now more negative energy in the world.  Yet even if I don't have an incredibly positive response (which wouldn't be appropriate in all situations, obviously), avoiding the harsh response would not create the negativity, or help it to grow if it's already there.

Life definitely is about energy.  From the electrical impulses that our bodies create to move and think and walk and talk to the sunlight that helps plants grow and become a huge, integral part of the circle of life, energy and energy levels determine to a great extent who we are, how we feel, and how we act.  This world's happiness, obviously, is a part of the positive flow of energy, and we can contribute to it.

I try very hard to contribute as little as I can to the negative energy of the world, and I try very hard to contribute as much as I can to the positive energy.  Compliments, heartfelt "thank you's," encouragement, even no response at all instead of negative words-- all of these things can help us to help happiness and positive energy to grow in our world.

Questions to ponder:

1.  What sort of positive energy have you contributed to the world today?

2.  How many opportunities do you have each day to contribute to positive energy and happiness?

3.  What would this world be like if everyone decided to try to contribute actively to the positive energy and happiness of others?

For further thought:

Note how good you feel after you have encouraged someone else.  No other argument is necessary to suggest that one never miss the opportunity to give encouragement.

George M. Adams
